Why only organic and vegetarian?
In recent years the organic market has grown exponentially. Wonderfully enough, this growth is completely due to the concerned consumer - you. Organically grown foods use no growth hormones and no synthetic pesticides, which means that they are much healthier for you and safer to your body than their conventional counterparts. However, now that "organic" has gone mainstream, there are things to watch out for... The federal government is now trying to deregulate what organic farmers have fought so hard to achieve in decades. There are laws that are being chopped apart to include the huge profits of the organic market into corporate pockets. For instance, there is no federal regulation on what a "free-range" chicken really is, so buying eggs that come from "free-range" chickens doesn't actually mean anything. Big corporations are now trying to reach into the organic market by twisting the rules to benefit themselves. Without naming any names, the organic marketplace is quickly being bought up by companies that have absolutely no interest in anything other than big profits. Milk produced from cows on massive feedlots is now being labeled as USDA Certified Organic. The whole point of why "organic" started is beginning to turn into a not-so-truthful reality.

The good news is that there are still REAL farmers out there who are fighting to keep their high organic standards in check and available to the informed customer. Eco-Goddess Edibles takes pride in their knowledge of the present organic marketplace and buys their ingredients from only the best sources. Buying from co-ops that are farmer owned is one of our priorities; as well as taking it a step further and sourcing locally grown organic foods. We work with a local farm here in Carbondale that has an organic and biodynamic garden (run bythe Eco-Goddess's sister, no less!) called Sustainable Settings. Not only are these wonderful foods all organic, but they are also planted in accordance with the planetary and lunar cycles. By working with local farmers, Eco-Goddess Edibles can also keep our "carbon footprint" extremely low. There are so many reasons to buy local - we'll just keep it at that!!
Choosing to offer only vegetarian options (including sustainably harvested seafood) is for many reasons... For one, the owner has been a vegetarian for over 15 years - for many reasons of her own! As a company, we have no problem with sustainably and respectfully harvested meats, but feel a huge percentage of the meats available today are neither of those. So we simply choose to be specific in our offering of vegetarian specialties.
